PSAT

PSAT is going to be given on October 13, 2010.

All freshmen and sophmores will be taking it FREE of charge!
Juniors can sign up in Guidance or with Mrs. Wiley.  Registration for juniors is October 4-12.  See Mrs. Alexander in Guidance either before or after school.  There is a $13 charge.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

• Critical reading skills
• Math problem-solving skills
• Writing skills

You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.
The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:

• Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
• See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
• Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
• Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
• Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

Gates Millenium Scholarship $

Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

• are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
• are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States
• have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED
• will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited college or university in the fall of 2011 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student (with the exception of students pursuing a high school diploma while concurrently enrolled).
• First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients
• have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities
• meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria
• have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student app, an eval of the student's academic record, and an eval of the student's community service and leadership activities by the DEADLINE which is JANUARY 10, 2011

UNF Minorities in Medicine Symposium - CANCELED

UNF HAS CANECELED THIS EVENT!

The ninth annual “Minorities in Medicine Student Symposium,” to be held:

Date: Saturday, November 20, 2010

Time: 8:30a - 1:30p

Place: at Mayo Clinic, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, Florida in the Kinne Auditorium.

The symposium’s targeted audience is minority high students who have expressed interest in medical and healthcare related careers. Students will be exposed to health careers options, scholarship/grant opportunities, meet medical professionals and attend informational workshops.

During the exhibition hall segment, students will have an opportunity to spend time with your representative(s) exploring your school’s programs, facilities, scholarship opportunities, etc.

This event is hosted by the University of North Florida Premedical Professions Program and Mayo Clinic.

SAT Prep Community Ed Classes

There will be a six week SAT Preparation Class held at Fletcher High beginning September 20th.  The Verbal section will be held on Mondays from 5:30-7:00pm and the Math section will be on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30pm.  registration is Monday-Thursday, 8/16-8/19 from 10:00am - 2:00pm in the main office and then Monday-Thursday, 8?23-9?16 from 3:00-5:00pm in the main office (or until the class is filled).  Space is limited to the first 20 students.  the price is $50.00 for one section or $80.00 for both, including the workbook.  For more information, call the Community Education Office at 247-5905 ext 1008.
