ACT-SO Program 2013-2014

NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a program for  students of African descent ,who are US citizens, enrolled in grades 9-12, amateurs in their categories’ of competition.  The program is designed to be a learning experience, enrichment, mentoring, opportunities to connect with leaders in the community with scholarship opportunities and
·         the chance to compete at the national level in Las Vegas.
·         Applications are due by January 10, 2014
·         There is a Student Orientation for those accepted on January 25, 2014
·         This is a national competition, with 27 competition categories’ including the Sciences, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Business.
·         Each students can compete in UP TO THREE AREAS
·         Past ACT-SO participants include actors Anthony Anderson and Jada Pinkett-Smith, film makes John Singleton and recording artist Kanye West.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Undocumented

Scholarship season is well underway.  We want to let you know about the multitude of scholarships that are available to you. To try to keep you up to date on the frequent postings, check the blog, our twitter @fhsguidance and our livebinders page

Remember, if the scholarship that you're applying to requires a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, etc., be courteous and give that person at least a week's notice.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DUE DATE to request important documents like a letter of recommendation or a transcript. 

Transcripts can be requested to be sent by Mrs. Rhone-Colson, our registrar, in the guidance office.

Volunteer Opportunity

The 2013 Mayor’s Holiday Festival scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.  The City of Jacksonville has produced this event for more than thirty years with a great deal of community support.

They will need assistance with set up, decorating, serving and clean up.

8 a.m. - 1 p.m.                       Set up & decorate              100 volunteers
1 p.m. - 6 p.m.                      Serving and clean up          250 volunteers needed

NACAC College Fair 2013

Don't forget that the College Fair is this coming Saturday Oct 12 from 9am - 1pm at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The 2013-14 Senior Scholarship Book


We are having a lot of fun talking to you about graduation requirements, scholarships, college, and more during your senior credit checks.  As promised here is the link to the DCPS Scholarship Book.  Please check it out and apply for any scholarship that you qualify for.  If you were absent during your senior credit check, we will call for you next week.  So far we've met with the following English classes:  all of Devaney's, Ms. Harman's, half of Ms. Sweet's classes.  We still need to meet with Ms. Sweet's B-Day classes and Ms. Johnson's classes.

Mayor Brown Essay Contest 2013-14

Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest
In support of Duval County Public Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, students are encouraged to participate in the Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest. Mayor Brown is proud to offer this competition as an incentive for all students to practice their writing skills and raise the bar for educational excellence in Jacksonville. 
There will be three (3) winners from each of the following categories: High School (9-12), Middle School (6-8), and Elementary (K-5). First place essays will receive an IPad 2 16GB. Second place essays will receive an IPad Mini 16 GB. Third place essays will receive a $100.00 gift card.
The City of Jacksonville will have a non-exclusive, transferable license to use and publish the essay.  The City will also have the right to identify the student author by name and photo in any press release or any publication of the essay.
The Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest will have the following judging criteria:
ü  Essay Title: Education is …
ü  Title page must include: essay title, student’s name, grade, school, and the name of the contact teacher
ü  Essay is to be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, Arial 12 point font, 1,000 – 1,500 words (High School and Middle School), Elementary School essays are to be 1-2 pages in length and 250-500 words
ü  Essay contest begins September 20 and ends midnight, October 4, 2013
Winners will be announced during the College Fair, Saturday, October 12.

Florida A&M University announces Rattler Review Days! 

Rattler Review Days are academically focused visits that highlight specific colleges and schools as well as offer on-site admissions decisions (with proper documents).  Review Days occur during the fall semester, and are reserved for juniors and seniors only.  Each event is scheduled on a Friday prior to a home game so that prospective students have the opportunity to attend a college event and experience the "FAMU Spirit"!  Please share this information with your junior and senior students.  Students can register at <>  and click on Events, or go to: <> .

Visual Art Contest 2013

In conjunction with Mayor Brown’s Essay Contest and Duval County Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, we are having a visual art contest. We are requesting that student art work be submitted for judging and inclusion as potential cover design of a children’s book of essays. Submitted art work will be judged in the categories of Elementary school, Middle school and High school. At least three winners will be chosen from each category.
The art work should relate to the Essay theme of “Education is …” The theme seeks to “explain what education means to you or tell us in your own words what you believe education is and how it will help you reach your dreams and goals.”
