Mayor Brown Essay Contest 2013-14



Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest
In support of Duval County Public Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, students are encouraged to participate in the Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest. Mayor Brown is proud to offer this competition as an incentive for all students to practice their writing skills and raise the bar for educational excellence in Jacksonville. 
There will be three (3) winners from each of the following categories: High School (9-12), Middle School (6-8), and Elementary (K-5). First place essays will receive an IPad 2 16GB. Second place essays will receive an IPad Mini 16 GB. Third place essays will receive a $100.00 gift card.
The City of Jacksonville will have a non-exclusive, transferable license to use and publish the essay.  The City will also have the right to identify the student author by name and photo in any press release or any publication of the essay.
The Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest will have the following judging criteria:
ü  Essay Title: Education is …
ü  Title page must include: essay title, student’s name, grade, school, and the name of the contact teacher
ü  Essay is to be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, Arial 12 point font, 1,000 – 1,500 words (High School and Middle School), Elementary School essays are to be 1-2 pages in length and 250-500 words
ü  Essay contest begins September 20 and ends midnight, October 4, 2013
Winners will be announced during the College Fair, Saturday, October 12.

Istanbul Cultural Center Essay Contest

Istanbul Cultural Center at Jacksonville presents an exciting essay contest for students and teachers in Jacksonville with the partnership of Florida State College, Duval County Public Schools and Istanbul Center of Atlanta.  The Theme of this year's essay contest is: "The Human Footprint on the Environment: Impacts & Solutions"


The Awards Ceremony of the Jacksonville Contest will be held as one event and will take place at FSCJ within the months of March or April (Exact date and venue to be announced). Please check the contest website for updates.

1st Place:
Trip to Turkey for the student, the teacher and their local district superintendent an Ipad for the student
a $100 Gift Card for the sponsoring teacher

2nd Place:
Trip to Turkey for the student, the teacher and their local district superintendent, a $200 Gift Card for the student, a $75 Gift Card for the sponsoring teacher

3rd Place:
Trip to Turkey for the student, the teacher and their local district superintendent, a $100 Gift Card for the student, a $50 Gift Card for the sponsoring teacher

4th Place:
a $75 Gift Card for the student

5th Place:
a $50 Gift Card for the student

6th through 10th Places:
a $25 Gift Card for the student

Essay Contest for Seniors!

Florida School Counselor Association 2012 Student Essay Competition


Eligibility:

· Participants should be high school seniors.
· Essays should not exceed one page providing detailed information on the impact your school counselor has had on you.
· ALL Essays must be submitted with a FSCA Essay Competition Entry Form (see below)

Award Contest - Hispanic Heritage

2011 Hispanic Heritage Month Contests

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott today invited students in kindergarten through 12th grades to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Month art and essay contests. They also invited students, parents, teachers and principals to nominate full-time Hispanic educators in elementary, middle or high schools for the Hispanic Heritage Month Excellence in Education Award.

The student contests focus on the theme “Celebrating Hispanic Leaders in Business – Past, Present and Future,” and Information about the contests and Florida’s Hispanic heritage is available on Florida’s Hispanic Heritage Month website, www.FloridaHispanicHeritage.com.

“Throughout our state’s history, Hispanic business leaders have helped make Florida the national leader we are,” Governor Scott said. “The cultural contributions to our state and country continue to leave a lasting legacy of strength, determination and pride.”

“The essay and art contests are a great opportunity for Florida’s children to learn about people who have made our state such a great place to live,” Mrs. Scott said. “As Florida’s students grow to become the leaders of tomorrow, it is important they learn about a variety of successful role models.”

About the Student Contests

Art Contest for Grades K-3 – The Hispanic Heritage Month art contest is open to all Florida students in grades K-3, and two winners will be selected. Please visit www.FloridaHispanicHeritage.com to download complete guidelines and entry forms.

Essay Contest for Grades 4 - 12 – The Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4 through 12. Three winners will be selected: one elementary student (grades 4-5), one middle-school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12). Winners will receive a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. About the Excellence in Education Award

Governor Scott’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month Excellence in Education Award Contest is open to all Hispanic, full time educators in an elementary, middle or high school in Florida. Three winners will be selected: one elementary teacher (grades K-5), one middle school teacher (grades 6-8), and one high school teacher (grades 9-12). Winners will receive a check for $1,500. About Hispanic Heritage Month
Several Latin American countries celebrate the anniversaries of independence during Hispanic Heritage Month. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrate independence on September 15. Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile, on September 18. Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974 when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long celebration, from September 15 through October 15.

Art & Essay Contest

Middle and high-school students around the city of Jacksonville are invited to submit an original artwork and/or essay on the theme of "Empathy: Walking in Another's Shoes".

The theme of "Empathy: Walking in Another's Shoes" means much more than thinking that one knows what other people go through every day.

Awards:
The Award Ceremony will take place on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 7:00 pm at The Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts.
1st Place: Apple iPad
2nd Place: $200 Gift Card
3rd Place: $100 Gift Card
