The 2013-14 Senior Scholarship Book
Seniors!
We are having a lot of fun talking to you about graduation requirements, scholarships, college, and more during your senior credit checks. As promised here is the link to the DCPS Scholarship Book. Please check it out and apply for any scholarship that you qualify for. If you were absent during your senior credit check, we will call for you next week. So far we've met with the following English classes: all of Devaney's, Ms. Harman's, half of Ms. Sweet's classes. We still need to meet with Ms. Sweet's B-Day classes and Ms. Johnson's classes.

Mayor Brown Essay Contest 2013-14
Mayor
Alvin Brown Essay Contest
In support of
Duval County Public Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, students are
encouraged to participate in the Mayor Alvin Brown Essay Contest. Mayor Brown
is proud to offer this competition as an incentive for all students to practice
their writing skills and raise the bar for educational excellence in
Jacksonville.
There will be
three (3) winners from each of the following categories: High School (9-12),
Middle School (6-8), and Elementary (K-5). First place essays will receive an
IPad 2 16GB. Second place essays will receive an IPad Mini 16 GB. Third place
essays will receive a $100.00 gift card.
The
City of Jacksonville will have a non-exclusive, transferable license to use and
publish the essay. The City will also have the right to identify the
student author by name and photo in any press release or any publication of the
essay.
The Mayor
Alvin Brown Essay Contest will have the following judging criteria:

Essay Title: Education is …

Title
page must include: essay title, student’s name, grade, school, and the name of
the contact teacher
ü
Essay
is to be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, Arial 12 point font, 1,000 – 1,500
words (High School and Middle School), Elementary School essays are to be 1-2
pages in length and 250-500 words
ü
Essay
contest begins September 20 and ends midnight, October 4, 2013
Winners will be
announced during the College Fair, Saturday, October 12.

Visual Art Contest 2013
In conjunction with Mayor Brown’s Essay Contest and
Duval County Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, we are having a
visual art contest. We are requesting that student art work be
submitted for judging and inclusion as potential
cover design of a children’s book of essays. Submitted art work will be
judged in the categories of Elementary school, Middle school and High
school. At least three winners will be chosen from each category.
The art work should relate to the Essay theme of
“Education is …” The theme seeks to “explain what education means to you
or tell us in your own words what you believe education is and how it
will help you reach your dreams and goals.”

Summer Grade Recovery Programs
Duval County Public Schools will host several free summer school opportunities
for elementary, middle and high school students in need of promotion or credit/course recovery.
Dates: June 18 - July 27, 2013
Time: 7:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

- Middle and High School Course Recovery
If your middle or high school student needs to recover a one credit course or two half-credit courses, this 6-week, half-day program is for you. Students may attend one of four middle schools or five high school sites for work through face-to-face teacher lead instruction in core courses or via a teacher and computer supported instructional model. At middle school, Grade 8 students needing one class for promotion will receive top priority. Attendance policy applies. - High School Course Recovery Sites
- Algebra I; Geometry; and Biology EOC/Course Recovery
Programs
If your middle or high school student needs to recover Algebra 1, Geometry, or Biology credit and/or its perspective End of Course (EOC) exams, this six (6) week program is for you. This program will cover the fundamental concepts of algebra. Students will also receive remediation that will prepare them for the retaking EOC exam. Students may attend one of five (5) school sites for teacher lead half day or full day instruction sessions for recovery of EOC tested courses. Grade 9 students needing recovery will receive top priority. Attendance policy applies. Full day sessions are based upon specific performance measures.
