Achieving the Dream Scholarship

Achieving the Dream Scholarship program which the Mayor’s Hispanic Council and the Hispanic Chamber sponsor. They will be awarding $5,000 in scholarships this fall and the deadline to register is 7/1/11.

MHAAB Mission:

To provide a means by which the City may obtain information, guidance, and ongoing comprehensive studies relating to its citizens of Hispanic descent, in order to effectively recognize the concerns and desires of Hispanic citizens.


Basis for Selection:
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, based solely on the content of the application. Applications will be evaluated and selections made by a panel of judges consisting of FCHCC and MHAAB members. Applicants' scores will be based upon the following criteria:

Academic Transcripts and Grades................ 30%

Honors and Awards................................... 10%

Extracurricular Activities............................ 20%

Essay...................................................... 30%

Financial Need.......................................... 10%



Scholarship Requirements:
The FCHCC and MHAAB have established scholarships in the amount of up to $2,000 to be awarded to Hispanic students that meet the following criteria:


The applicant must be currently accepted to and planning to attend a two- or four-year university during the 2011-2012 fall term, or currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution and has a cumulative GPA average of 3.0 or better.



The applicant must be at most a third-generation Hispanic, a Permanent Resident Alien or U.S. citizen with established residency in the Florida First Coast region: Duval, St. Johns, Baker, Clay, or Nassau counties for at least three (3) years prior to the awarding date of the scholarship.

Applicants Must Submit:
*Completed Application
*Official transcript
*Proof of acceptance or enrollment in a two- or four-year university or graduate school
*Essay (400-450 words) explaining why you need or deserve to receive this scholarship Two professional letters of recommendation Resume (if application is for graduate school).

The stipend will be used to pay for tuition and/or books and will be in addition to and not to conflict with any other scholarships or grants the student may be entitled to.


Deadline for Submission:
Applications must be submitted online no later than July 1, 2011. Selections will be made by the Scholarship selection committee. Recipents will be informed in the Fall.

Your application must be submitted online and only applications submitted online will be accepted.


Do I need to submit my application via Certified mail?
There's no need to send your application either Certified or Registered mail.


Would I be notified if I have been selected?
Yes, only selected recipients will be notified by phone. Communications will happen in the late summer. Keep checking our website for the list of selected Achieving the Dream recipients. The names of the selected recipients will be published on our website and in our Fall eNewsletter issue.
